Dangers of plastic surgery tourismAs plastic surgery has become more popular, so has the idea of “plastic surgery tourism.” Many prospective patients contemplate the idea of traveling abroad to have plastic surgery done at a cheaper or discounted cost. However, board-certified plastic surgeons, including Miami’s own Dr. Ary Krau, strongly recommend that anyone considering taking a “plastic surgery vacation” do their research first and consider the potential consequences.

The Potential Dangers of Plastic Surgery Tourism

The caveat with cheap or discounted plastic surgery. Some plastic surgeons (both in the U.S. and abroad) offer plastic surgery at discounted prices because they use outdated practices. Others may do so because they do not perform surgery at an accredited surgical facility or because they cut costs with the technologies and equipment they use. All of these factors can dramatically increase the risk of a serious complication.

Vacation-related activities can compromise your health. The idea of a “plastic surgery vacation” may seem enticing but keep in mind that your mobility will be limited and your energy will be low immediately after surgery. Certain vacation activities, including time at the beach, lounging by the pool, surfing and similar physical activities can increase the risk of a complication post-surgery, not to mention compromise your cosmetic results.

Long flights immediately after surgery should also be avoided as they increase the risk of pulmonary embolism and blood clots.

You may not be legally protected in the U.S. There are no U.S. laws that would protect you as a patient in case surgical negligence occurs during plastic surgery abroad. There are also no U.S. laws that mandate the training and qualifications of physicians who perform plastic surgery outside the country.

Consider the Hidden Costs

Plastic surgery abroad may seem cheaper at first glance, but consider the possibility of revision surgeries and complications. These, along with the cost of additional travel fare and aftercare may actually total more than the cost of an operation performed in the U.S.
