Gynecomastia for enlarged male breastsIf you are embarrassed by excessive breast tissue, you are not alone. It is estimated that 40 to 60 percent of men have enlarged breasts (a condition known as gynecomastia). Last year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons estimated that more than 24,000 of those men underwent male breast reduction and now enjoy a more masculine looking chest.

Dr. Ary Krau is the go-to plastic surgeon for the treatment of gynecomastia in the Miami area. He has helped hundreds of men with “man boobs” regain their confidence and live happier lives. In this blog post, he shares more information about gynecomastia and the treatment for it.

What Causes Man Boobs?

There are several factors believed to cause the development of excess breast tissue:

  • Hormonal imbalance (i.e., excess female hormones)
  • Certain medical conditions (e.g., testicular tumors, Kleinfelter’s Syndrome)
  • Use of anabolic steroids
  • Drug or alcohol use

More about Male Breast Reduction

Men that are physically and psychologically healthy, not overweight and have good skin elasticity may be suitable candidates for male breast reduction, or gynecomastia surgery. The operation is performed on an outpatient basis. Local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia is administered for patient comfort.

Dr. Krau makes a small surgical incision around the areola (the darkly pigmented skin surrounding the nipple). He removes excess tissue and skin. Excess glandular tissue is excised and fat tissue is removed using liposuction techniques and technology. Dr. Krau can also reduce oversized areolas at the patient’s request. When he is finished with these steps, he closes the incisions and bandages the chest. Dr. Krau may place a compression garment over the chest to help the healing process.

It is common for patients to have some bruising, swelling and soreness following surgery. At first, range of motion may be limited. Within a few days to a week, patients regain strength and can gradually reincorporate normal activities, including work, socializing and exercise.

Benefits of Male Breast Reduction

The most obvious benefit of male breast reduction is the improvement in the appearance of the chest. The breast area looks flatter, firmer and more masculine.

Male breast reduction is also beneficial in a psychological context: patients have higher self-esteem and feel more confident after surgery.

Other benefits include better-fitting clothing, reduction of skin chafing/irritation under the breasts and less anxiety going shirtless at the beach, pool or gym.
