Choose a rhinoplasty surgeon

Choosing a plastic surgeon for your rhinoplasty procedure is just as important as the surgery itself. This is why leading Miami plastic surgeon Dr. Ary Krau has put together a list of questions to ask your potential plastic surgeon before choosing the right one.

Are you board certified?
A qualified rhinoplasty surgeon should be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This ensures the surgeon has earned a degree from an accredited medical school, completed specialized surgical training and passed rigorous examinations of his or her plastic surgery knowledge.

How many years of experience do you have?
The average surgeon only performs a few rhinoplasty procedures a year. Be sure your rhinoplasty surgeon has years of experience and has performed a large volume of rhinoplasty procedures. Each patient and surgery is different, so the more surgeries your surgeon has performed, the more experienced and skilled he or she is as a rhinoplasty surgeon.

Am I a good candidate for this procedure?
Rhinoplasty is not for everyone. The procedure is meant to correct a number of problems, including an oversized, crooked or wide nose, uneven or oversized nostrils or a bump on the nasal bridge. A qualified rhinoplasty surgeon will evaluate your nose and discuss your goals and options with you before recommending surgery. The surgeon will also determine whether or not you are in good physical and psychological health.

What should I expect before the procedure?
To achieve the best rhinoplasty results, you may be asked to do several things to prepare for the procedure. For example, if you smoke, you will be asked to quit before surgery.

What should I expect after the procedure?
A qualified rhinoplasty surgeon will tell you how much pain and discomfort you can expect, which will depend on how invasive your procedure is and which nasal structures need to be altered. Your surgeon should also be able to estimate your recovery time.

What does your procedure entail?
Not all surgeons practice the same techniques. There are two types of rhinoplasty procedures: open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. The closed approach makes incisions inside the nostrils, whereas the open approach makes an incision across the strip of skin separating the nostrils as well as incisions inside the nostrils. Ask your surgeon which incisions they use in which situations, and which approach would be best for you.

Do you have before and after photos of your previous work?
Looking at before and after pictures of a plastic surgeon’s rhinoplasty work can give you an idea of his or her skills and of what kind of results to expect.

What are the risks of rhinoplasty?
Although risks and complications from rhinoplasty surgery are rare, an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon will disclose the potential risks so you can make a well-informed decision about rhinoplasty. Potential risks include bleeding, infection and skin discoloration.

What are the costs of rhinoplasty?

The price of rhinoplasty may vary from surgeon to surgeon. The final price will also depend on how much work goes into the procedure. Be sure to ask your potential rhinoplasty surgeon for a customized estimate.

When are the results of rhinoplasty visible?
Some rhinoplasty results will start to become apparent two weeks after surgery. But a qualified surgeon knows that the final results may take one year or more. Ask the plastic surgeons you are considering how long you should expect your recovery to last and when you can expect to see your final results.
