Dr. Krau’s approach is patient-centric, prioritizing not just the aesthetic outcome but also the health and wellbeing of each patient. His high safety standards and personalized care plans are key to his success when combining cosmetic procedures.

Depending on the procedure you undergo with Dr. Ary Krau, he may recommend you wear a compression garment over the treated area to ensure a safe and comfortable recovery. Read on as Dr. Krau reveals what you should know about these garments.

Benefits of a Compression Garment

A compression garment puts pressure on the body as it heals from surgery. The garments are made from strong materials such as nylon or Lycra, and come in different styles and sizes so they can be worn on different parts of the body.

Some garments resemble girdles and are worn over the torso after abdominal liposuction or tummy tuck. Other garments resemble stockings or sleeves and are worn over the arms or legs after liposuction. There are also compression bras, which resemble sports bras without underwire and are worn after breast augmentation, reduction or lift.

Compression garments offer several key benefits after plastic surgery:

• Control swelling that forms after surgery – the pressure of the garment prevents fluid buildup and encourages the body to absorb fluid that does accumulate

• Reduce bruising – the pressure prevents blood from moving toward the surface of the skin

• Protect the delicate incision sites

• Help skin retract or contract over the treated area – the garment provides support to the healing skin and reduces the risk of laxity or wrinkling

Prior to your surgery, Dr. Krau and our team can take your measurements and help you find a compression garment that fits you properly. Your garment should feel snug, but it should not be uncomfortable or interfere with your breathing.

How Long Is a Compression Garment Normally Worn?

We will give you specific instructions and a timeline for wearing your garment after surgery, depending on your individual treatment plan. In general, the more you wear it, the more effective it is. You can expect to wear the garment full-time for about three weeks after surgery, removing it only to shower and get lymphatic massages (if massage is part of your post-operative routine). After the initial recovery phase, you can switch to wearing the garment for only 12 hours a day for about six weeks. Many patients prefer to wear the garment at night while sleeping.

To optimize your experience and help you get the most out of your plastic surgery, Dr. Ary Krau has a few tips to help you prepare. Read on as he shares a short guide to plastic surgery prep.

Medications and Supplements

Dr. Krau will provide you with a complete list of medications, vitamins and supplements to avoid in the two to four weeks leading up to your surgery. You will be asked to discontinue the use of aspirin, ibuprofen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), vitamin E and herbal supplements known to increase bleeding and other surgical risks. Tylenol can be taken for headaches.

If you have questions about medications you take to control any pre-existing health conditions, do not hesitate to ask Dr. Krau for clarification.

Healthy Diet and Exercise

Healthy patients heal better after plastic surgery. By taking care of yourself with the proper diet and exercise, you increase your chances of a speedy, smooth recovery.

Starting a few weeks before your surgery, pay attention to what you eat. A great diet will put you in good shape for an optimal recovery and the best possible outcomes. Avoid aggressively dieting and focus on fueling your body with good nutrition, including plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean protein and whole grains. Stay well-hydrated.

Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol during the pre-operative period. Stop smoking for two weeks prior to surgery and avoid alcohol for at least three days before your surgery (one week is optimal).

Exercising prior to plastic surgery makes your body strong and resilient. It also helps keep your weight stable, which is important to your ultimate outcome. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise, three times a week.

Mental Preparation

Another important part of the pre-operative period is preparing your mind for surgery. Don’t over-think things: keep a calm perspective and a positive outlook. Minimize unnecessary stress in whatever way feels natural to you: deep breathing exercises, yoga, meditation or exercise.

Do your homework on your planned procedure, but do not scare yourself by googling plastic surgery horror stories on the Internet. Talk to supportive friends and family members, but do not allow anyone’s negative opinion to sour your outlook. If you have questions about your upcoming procedure, reach out to our team. We are here to educate you and help you feel prepared and calm about your upcoming treatment.

Contact Dr. Ary Krau

For more information about preparing for plastic surgery, Dr. Krau is only a phone call or email away. We look forward to helping you achieve your aesthetic goals!

Sleep is an incredibly important part of recovering from plastic surgery, as it has a range of health benefits.

Here, Dr. Ary Krau explains why getting plenty of shut-eye can help you enjoy your new look and return to work and other regular activities faster.

What Sleep Does for Your Body After Surgery

Getting quality, restful sleep promotes your body’s ability to heal and bounce back after your operation. Some of the specific benefits of sleep include the following:

• Reduces inflammation
• Boosts your immune system to fight off potential infection
• Helps to minimize pain
• Improves circulation
• Soothes frazzled nerves

Your body needs lots of sleep after surgery; however, you might find that your quality of sleep suffers while you are recuperating. Your incisions and bandages may prevent you from sleeping in your regular sleeping positions, or you might feel stressed or anxious around bedtime.

Dr. Krau has some helpful tips to improve your sleep quality after surgery.

First, if you had facial plastic surgery and Dr. Krau has requested you sleep with your head elevated, prop your head up on a few pillows that provide firm support, or a wedge-shaped pillow. Alternatively, you might find it more comfortable to sleep in a reclining chair rather than in bed.

If you had breast or body surgery, sleeping on your back at a slight incline eliminates the need to strain to sit up and get out of bed. Placing pillows around the sides of your body ensures that you do not roll over onto your stomach while you sleep. And, many people find that placing pillows under the knees creates a natural curvature that is comfortable during sleep.

Are you experiencing trouble falling or staying asleep during your surgical recovery? Make sure you are not consuming caffeine too late in the day, and avoid alcohol altogether. Refrain from using a computer or smartphone right before bedtime, as the blue light from digital screens can interfere with your sleep. You might also want to try following a guided meditation or doing some breathing exercises around bedtime to signal to your body that it is time to rest.

If you have additional questions about sleeping after plastic surgery, Dr. Krau and our team are here to help. We will do everything we can to ensure you have the information and resources you need to enjoy a smooth, swift recovery.

As such, it is important to know what qualities a reputable surgeon should and should not possess. In this blog post, Miami plastic surgeon Dr. Ary Krau discusses red flags to be aware of when meeting and selecting a plastic surgeon.

The Surgeon Is Not Certified by the ABPS

Stay away from doctors who call themselves plastic surgeons but are not certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Being certified by the ABPS is the ultimate form of accreditation for a plastic surgeon, as it signifies that he or she has graduated from an accredited medical school, completed years of specialized training in plastic surgery and rigorous exams to test their knowledge in the field. ABPS-certified plastic surgeons are required to take continuing education courses to stay up-to-date on the latest practices and technologies, and perform surgery in accredited medical facilities, which are fully equipped to respond to medical emergencies.

Non-certified doctors may lack the skill, training and experience necessary to ensure a safe and successful plastic surgery outcome. You can verify a doctor’s board certification by visiting the ABPS website.

The Surgeon Tries to Upsell You

Beware of surgeons that try to pressure you into having procedures that you didn’t express an interest in or procedures that don’t seem to meet your aesthetic needs. Qualified plastic surgeons will discuss all possible treatment options with you, including the possibility of combining procedures, but their recommendations should always align with your unique concerns and goals.

The Surgeon Promises Perfection without Any Risks

All plastic surgery procedures come with a degree of risk. While working with a board-certified plastic surgeon dramatically lowers the risks, complications are still a possibility. Any plastic surgeon that promises a perfect result without any risks, or is unwilling to discuss potential risks with you in detail, should not be trusted.

The Surgeon or Their Staff Makes You Feel Uncomfortable

While finding a credentialed plastic surgeon is certainly important, it is not enough to ensure a successful plastic surgery experience. If you feel intimidated or uncomfortable with the surgeon or their staff during your consultation, it’s best to continue exploring your options. Working with a plastic surgeon whom you trust and with whom you feel completely comfortable promotes good communication, which can lead to a more positive plastic surgery experience.

However, it is normal for patients to feel a little nervous before undergoing surgery. Dr. Krau understands plastic surgery can be intimidating for some patients and is committed to putting his patients at ease before and after their treatment. In this blog post, the trusted Miami plastic surgeon shares the following tips.

Choose a Qualified Plastic Surgeon

Working with a qualified plastic surgeon is the best way to ensure a safe and successful plastic surgery experience. When choosing a surgeon make sure to read about the credentials and experience of the surgeons you are considering. Review their bios, visit their before-and-after galleries and read testimonials from their patients. Once you have chosen a qualified surgeon, you will probably feel less nervous. However, understand that no one is more invested in your safety, comfort and satisfaction than your plastic surgeon, so don’t hesitate to discuss your concerns or fears with him or her!

Know What to Expect

Knowing what happens before, during and after your procedure can reduce anxiety and help you feel more in control as you prepare for your procedure. Be sure to take the time to research your procedure thoroughly, as well as the pre- and post-operative steps involved. Only use credible sources, like the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or the website of your own surgeon, to gather information on your procedure. If you have questions or concerns after your research, be sure to bring them up during your pre-operative consultations with your surgeon.

Prepare for Your Recovery

Many nervous patients find it helpful to prepare for their surgical recovery ahead of time as it reduces stress about the post-operative phase and it gives them something productive to do. Prep your recovery space (either your couch or bed) with clean sheets, blankets and pillows. Fill your prescriptions, shop for groceries and other recovery essentials (e.g., ice packs), and stock up on DVDs, audiobooks, magazines and anything else that will make your recovery more comfortable.

Contact Dr. Krau

If you have questions or concerns regarding your upcoming plastic surgery procedure, Dr. Krau is more than glad to meet with you and discuss them in detail. Contact our office by calling (305) 861-6881 or emailing us today.

In this post, board-certified plastic surgeon Ary Krau breaks down the distinctions between plastic surgeons and cosmetic surgeons to help you understand your options.

Background and Training

Although plastic surgeons and cosmetic surgeons offer many or most of the same procedures, their qualifications to perform these surgeries are usually quite different.

After graduating from medical school, plastic surgeons complete a plastic surgery residency program, which lasts five to six years or more. This program involves at least three years of general surgical training and two to three years of training in plastic surgery. Some plastic surgeons go on to complete additional fellowship programs in the area of their choice (e.g., breast, facial or hand surgery), training in esteemed hospitals or under the guidance of renowned plastic surgeons in private practice.

After graduating from medical school, a cosmetic surgeon does not have a singularly defined path. They may complete a residency training program focused on general surgery, gynecology, dermatology, or another area of medicine. Their plastic surgery training may only be limited to a year-long fellowship program or a few weekend courses.

Board Certification

To be considered a board-certified plastic surgeon, doctors must meet many high standards set forth by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (the only board acknowledged by the American Board of Medical Specialties for plastic surgery). ABPS requires doctors to have a medical degree and formal plastic surgery training from an accredited program. They must also pass difficult exams testing their knowledge of the specialty. Once in practice, board-certified plastic surgeons must adhere to strict standards of conduct, judgment, ethics and safety.

If you meet a doctor that calls themselves a board-certified cosmetic surgeon, do not assume they belong to the ABPS. Cosmetic surgeons may be board-certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (not recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties for plastic surgery) or another specialty board, like the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Or, they may not be certified by any medical board.

The Bottom Line

There are many cosmetic surgeons that are, in fact, well-trained and upfront about their credentials. The problem is dishonest cosmetic surgeons that mislead patients into thinking they are actually plastic surgeons, but in reality, lack the training and knowledge needed to perform complex aesthetic and reconstructive procedures.

As a patient, you have the right to inquire about your doctor’s educational background, training and credentials. It’s perfectly acceptable to confirm your plastic surgeon is certified by the ABPS and to ask questions to clarify something that sounds confusing. The best surgeons will be completely candid and transparent with you to earn your trust.

However, as a patient, you must do your part to minimize the risk of complications. You might be familiar with the plastic surgery patient “do’s” — but what about the “don’ts”?

Dr. Ary Krau has you covered. Here, the Miami plastic surgeon reveals a few things that you should NOT do as you prepare for your surgery.

Smoke

Nothing raises the risks of surgery and recovery like smoking. Nicotine clamps down on the blood vessels and minimizes blood flow to the treated and healing tissues. It increases the risk of infection, tissue death, poor wound healing and noticeable scarring. Smoking also prolongs the healing process.

Avoid all forms of nicotine — including cigarettes and e-cigarettes — for at least two weeks prior to your operation. If you need a cessation aid, talk to your plastic surgeon about your options.

Go Out for a Big Meal

You certainly want to fuel your body as you prepare for plastic surgery, but for 24 hours prior to your operation, try to eat light and healthy. Don’t go out for a big, calorie-packed meal the night before your plastic surgery. Try to avoid foods that take longer to digest, such as starches, grains and meat. Ask our team for suggestions if you need them!

Imbibe Alcohol

Along the same lines, drinking alcohol so close to your surgery date may cause complications. Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours prior to your surgery. Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your surgery.

Take Blood Thinners

A number of medications, vitamins and minerals can thin your blood and negatively impact your surgery and recovery. It’s best to give your surgeon a list of your normal supplements and medications, so he can advise what to avoid. Common blood thinners include vitamin E, fish oil supplements, gingko biloba and St. John’s wort.

Second-Guess Your Treatment Plan

It’s common to have some nervous feelings as you anticipate your surgery. It’s not every day that you undergo a serious operation! However, try to avoid making any last-minute decisions about changing a part of your treatment. Remember that you and Dr. Krau have talked through your options and developed a well-thought-out treatment plan. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask! However, to make significant changes (like your implant size) would be ill advised at this point.

The data showed overall growth of 3 percent in cosmetic procedures nationally in 2016. Read on as Dr. Ary Krau, a trusted Miami plastic surgeon, breaks down other findings from the report.

The Most Popular Cosmetic Procedures of 2016

Breast augmentation was the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in 2016, and saw an increase of 4 percent from 2015. Dr. Krau is a busy breast augmentation surgeon who helps many Miami women enjoy the sexy, voluptuous breasts they desire.

The second most popular procedure was liposuction, which was up 6 percent from the previous year. Liposuction is often performed on the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, upper arms and neck, as well as under the chin.

Nose reshaping, or rhinoplasty, claimed the third most popular spot, and was up 2 percent from 2015. Rhinoplasty is another one of Dr. Krau’s special interests, and an area in which he is extremely talented.

Rounding out the top five cosmetic surgical procedures were eyelid surgery (up 2 percent) and facelift (up 4 percent).

In the non-surgical space, botulinum toxin type A injections (e.g., Botox, Dysport) were the most popular procedures, up 4 percent from 2015. Soft tissue fillers, which include Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane, were the second most popular procedures and up 2 percent. Chemical peel, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion were also included in the top five minimally invasive procedures.

Fat Transfer Gains Popularity

A newer, more appealing alternative to traditional dermal fillers is gaining steam. Many patients are opting for fat transfer, which is the practice of removing unwanted body fat from one area and injecting it into other areas, such as the face, breasts or buttocks, to add volume and shape. Not only does this approach remove unwanted body fat from the donor area, like the abdomen or thighs, but the transplanted fat tends to last longer than traditional dermal fillers.

According to the ASPS, breast augmentation with fat transfer increased by 72 percent last year and buttock augmentation with fat transfer increased by 26 percent.

Minimally Invasive Options Still In Demand

Minimally invasive forms of body contouring and skin tightening are still in high demand. Non-surgical fat reduction with CoolSculpting and non-surgical skin tightening procedures both increased by 5 percent last year.

Requests for Labiaplasty On the Rise

Another relatively newer procedure on the plastic surgery scene is labiaplasty, which reshapes or resizes the labial tissues for greater personal comfort and confidence. The number of labiaplasty procedures increased by 39 percent in 2016.

How Can Dr. Krau Help You?

Plastic surgery statistics may grab your attention, but the most important procedure is the one that will make you look and feel your best. The entire South Florida region is home to many elite plastic surgeons that provide a wide range of cosmetic treatments. Read on as Dr. Ary Krau reveals the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the South Florida area.

1. Breast Augmentation

According to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the most popular procedure in South Florida is breast augmentation. More women than ever are opting to have their breasts enlarged with saline or silicone implants.

Breast augmentation is one of Dr. Krau’s specialties. He has more than 20 years of experience and currently performs nearly 1,500 breast augmentation procedures annually. Dr. Krau is one of 35 plastic surgeons in the nation selected for the Mentor LEAD Program Advisory Board, which helps shape the future of breast augmentation techniques and products. Thanks to Dr. Krau’s breast augmentation expertise, thousands of women in Miami and the surrounding areas enjoy bigger, sexier breasts!

2. Liposuction

Thanks to its year-round sunshine and warm temperatures, Miami residents spend many months in bathing suits; as such, it’s understandable that body contouring with liposuction — which can produce a beautiful beach body — is a very popular plastic surgery procedure in this city.

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure; instead, it removes selective pockets of fat from areas of the body to create a slimmer and more sculpted shape. It can be used to sculpt the abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, upper arms, back and even smaller areas like the ankles, neck and chin.

3. Facelift

Facelift is another extremely popular plastic surgery procedure in South Florida, perhaps because the pleasant climate attracts so many active retirees. By minimizing signs of aging and subtly improving the facial contours, facelift turns back the clock by 10 to 15 years. The aging process doesn’t stop, but patients look like younger versions of themselves.

4. Eyelid Surgery

Facelift is great for overall facial rejuvenation, whereas eyelid surgery concentrates solely on aging eyes. Eyelid surgery can treat the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both. The lids look tighter, smoother and more youthful after surgery. Dr. Krau is known for his subtle approach that refreshes the entire eye area without any telltale signs of surgery.

5. Nose Reshaping

Another popular procedure in South Florida is rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping surgery. Although many plastic surgeons consider rhinoplasty the most difficult type of surgery, Dr. Krau embraces the challenge and enjoys creating beautiful results. Through rhinoplasty, he can reshape an oversized, crooked or wide nose, remove a visible hump, refine the nostrils or nasal tip and correct anatomical abnormalities that obstruct breathing function.
