How To Fix Breast Asymmetry

Where Are Breast Lift Scars Located?

The degree of scarring depends on the surgical incisions, and the incisions are based on the severity of the breast sagging as well as the specific surgical changes that are required. In general, a patient who has mild sagging and only requires minor surgical changes will have less scarring than a patient with severe sagging who requires more comprehensive surgical changes.

There are several breast lift incision patterns. Depending on the degree of breast sagging, the surgical incisions may be made in one of the following patterns:

• “Doughnut” shape: encircling the edge of the areola
• “Lollipop” shape: encircling the areola and extending vertically down to the base of the breast
• “Anchor” shape: encircling the areola and extending vertically down to the base of the breast and horizontally along the breast crease

How Noticeable Will the Scars Be?

Volume vs. Shape and Perkiness

What breast augmentation candidates should understand is the difference between breast volume and breast shape/perkiness. Adding more volume to the breasts does not necessarily give them a perkier appearance. In some cases, it can actually do the exact opposite and make the breasts look saggier and droopier. The natural position of the breasts prior to breast augmentation surgery is largely what determines whether the breasts will look perky with implants.

Breasts that look naturally perky, but are too small for the patient’s liking, are very likely to remain perky after the placement of breast implants. The implants should not cause the breasts to droop or sag — they will simply add more fullness and projection in the upper and lower poles (i.e., regions) of the breasts. Likewise, breasts that are on the naturally small side and have a minimal amount of excess skin may look perkier after surgery because the implant “fills out” the empty skin envelope.

However, breasts that are small and noticeably saggy, with excess hanging skin, do not look perkier after the placement of implants. The implants settle at the bottom of the breasts and actually accentuate the sagging. Over time, the implants can stretch out the loose skin even more, giving the implants a dramatically droopy and aged appearance.

While genetics play a big role in breast sagging, there are a few things you can do to prevent it in the first place. Try not to fluctuate greatly in body weight; gaining and losing a lot of weight in a short period of time can take its toll on the breasts. Be diligent about wearing sunscreen on your chest and décolletage area to protect the skin from the sun’s rays. Wear a supportive bra as much as possible, especially when performing high-intensity aerobic exercise.

Do: Wear Your Surgical Bra

Swelling is normal after breast lift surgery and may cause slight discomfort. Wearing a surgical bra helps to control the swelling and related pain. The garment puts slight pressure on the breast tissues and supports them as they heal. After a few days, you can switch to a sports bra-like garment with a front closure and wide straps. Do not switch to bras with underwire until Dr. Krau has cleared you to do so.

Don’t: Buy Bras Too Soon

It is exciting to dream about your lifted breasts and tempting to stock up on sexy bras before surgery. However, wait a few weeks after surgery for your breast position to stabilize before shopping for bras. You might find that you wear a different size or prefer a different style.

Do: Start Walking When You Feel Ready

Gentle movement is encouraged during your recovery as soon as you feel ready. Dr. Krau recommends taking short walks when you feel up to it. Riding a stationary bike is also acceptable.

Don’t: Start Vigorous Exercise without Doctor Approval

Avoid any strenuous activity, including heavy lifting or bending, until Dr. Krau has cleared you. This could be up to four weeks after surgery. Sex should be avoided for one to two weeks.

Extreme fluctuations in weight can cause the skin — including breast skin — to lose its elastic quality, so it can no longer “bounce back” to a smaller shape and size once you lose a substantial amount of weight. Try to maintain a healthy weight by eating well-balanced, nutritious meals and getting regular exercise.

Don’t Smoke. We all know that smoking is bad for our health. But you may not realize how bad it is for your outward appearance as well. Smoking impedes proper blood circulation and robs your blood of life-giving oxygen. It also damages collagen and elastin, two proteins that are essential for healthy, elastic skin. All these negative effects of smoking can lead to the development of wrinkles, sagging skin and hard, dull-looking skin — throughout your face, décolletage and breasts.

Do Eat Nutritious Foods. Eating the wrong foods, such as excessive amounts of sugar, can wreak havoc on your skin, including your breast skin, making it look dull and dry. However, eating nutritious foods can have a beneficial effect on your appearance. For instance, eating foods high in antioxidants will help combat free radicals that damage skin cells and encourage cellular repair, both of which will help keep your breast skin looking healthy and youthful.

Don’t Go Out in the Sun Without Proper Protection. The skin on your neck and décolletage is thin and sensitive. Also, your chest area gets a lot of sun exposure when you are wearing bathing suits or low-cut blouses and dresses. Sun exposure without proper protection (i.e., clothes or broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF) can cause dark spots (hyperpigmentation) to appear on your décolletage and cleavage wrinkles to develop. To keep your breasts looking young, don’t skimp on the sunscreen, and apply it liberally to your décolletage when you know you will be out in the sun.

Do Stay Active. Staying active will help keep you fit on the inside and looking great on the outside as you age. This includes cardiovascular exercise as well as strength training. Enhancing the muscles in your chest can provide a subtle lift throughout the breast area. Also, building muscle throughout your back, chest, arms and core will help you maintain good posture — which makes you look slimmer and your breasts look perkier. What woman doesn’t want that?

Depending on your breast shape and size, and the lift needed, your surgeon will use one of a few common techniques to complete the procedure. Optimally, your surgeon will aim to use the technique that creates the most lift with the least amount of incisions, which will reduce scarring and speed healing.

The below techniques are listed from most invasive to the least invasive procedures. In general, the more invasive the technique, the bigger the incision and the bigger the lift are.

Anchor lift is used to correct significant breast droop, and it’s commonly used in conjunction with a breast reduction. This is the most invasive technique where an incision is made around the areola, down from the areola to the breast crease and along the breast crease in an anchor shape. This technique relies on tightening the skin to maintain breast shape, which overtime is not as effective or long-lasting as other techniques.

Lollipop lift or keyhole incision is less invasive than the anchor lift and can be used to correct a moderate degree of sagging. An incision is made around the areola and down to the breast crease. It may be technically referred to as a vertical scar mastoplexy. This procedure produces dramatically less scarring than the horizontal (anchor) incision, and typically lasts longer than an anchor lift.

Benelli lift or doughnut lift is even less invasive, and only requires an incision around the aereola. It may also be called a peri-areola incision. Women with mild to moderate sagging may benefit from this technique. This procedure, when combined with implants, often leads to very satisfactory results.

Crescent lift is the least invasive of all the lift techniques. The surgeon makes a small crescent-shaped incision at the top of the areola to tighten the skin. It’s best for women with very mild sagging or women who undergo a lift procedure in conjunction with implants.
