What Causes Breast Asymmetry?

Breast Lift Without Breast Implants

If undergoing breast lift simply to reduce sagging, there’s no need to introduce implants. Lots of patients are perfectly happy with the size of their breasts. It’s what happened to their shape that’s the issue.

Aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding and substantial weight loss can cause droopiness, as well as some asymmetry. Nipples also sag lower on the breasts and point downward over time. Breast lift raises the nipples to a better position.

The result is a natural, perkier breast appearance and feel. Fullness does not increase, but your breasts look much like they did in your youth or before having children.

Will Breast Implants Make Me Gain Weight?

Even if you opt for much larger breasts, the implants won’t cause significant weight gain. At best, you might find your weight has increased by a pound or two. If you find yourself gaining weight after breast augmentation surgery, it’s safe to say the two events are unrelated. Ask your primary care doctor about the right diet and exercise program to keep yourself at a healthy weight.

Do Breast Implants Freeze When It Is Very Cold?

In extreme temperatures, breast implants made of saline or silicone can freeze. However, that freezing point is minus 28 Fahrenheit for saline implants and minus 67 degrees Fahrenheit for the silicone variety. Even in very cold temperatures, your body heat prevents implants from freezing. If you find yourself in such extreme temperatures, you’ll have other problems on your plate besides frozen implants.

Can Sexual Activity Cause Breast Implants to Rupture?

This is a frequent concern for women. Ruptures are always possible with implants. That said, the odds are against such a rupture happening during sexual activity. If you do experience breast pain, then there is a slight potential of a rupture occurring.

Ruptures most often occur in older implants due to normal aging. Chest trauma, such as a motor vehicle accident, can result in rupture. Saline leaks out quickly, so the rupture is immediately apparent. Because of its gel form, it takes silicone longer to leak out, and the free silicone can get trapped in the scar tissue surrounding the implant. The leakage may have been going on for a while before it becomes obvious. For this reason, imaging tests are recommended every few years to ensure the integrity of silicone implants.

This is a question best referred to an accountant. However, it is unlikely that your breast implants are tax-deductible.

Volume vs. Shape and Perkiness

What breast augmentation candidates should understand is the difference between breast volume and breast shape/perkiness. Adding more volume to the breasts does not necessarily give them a perkier appearance. In some cases, it can actually do the exact opposite and make the breasts look saggier and droopier. The natural position of the breasts prior to breast augmentation surgery is largely what determines whether the breasts will look perky with implants.

Breasts that look naturally perky, but are too small for the patient’s liking, are very likely to remain perky after the placement of breast implants. The implants should not cause the breasts to droop or sag — they will simply add more fullness and projection in the upper and lower poles (i.e., regions) of the breasts. Likewise, breasts that are on the naturally small side and have a minimal amount of excess skin may look perkier after surgery because the implant “fills out” the empty skin envelope.

However, breasts that are small and noticeably saggy, with excess hanging skin, do not look perkier after the placement of implants. The implants settle at the bottom of the breasts and actually accentuate the sagging. Over time, the implants can stretch out the loose skin even more, giving the implants a dramatically droopy and aged appearance.

Achieving Larger and Perkier Breasts Simultaneously

Women that want bigger and perkier breasts with noticeable sagging can usually benefit from a combination breast augmentation-breast lift procedure.

During the operation, Dr. Krau trims loose skin and tightens the skin envelope to correct the sagging and give the breasts a perkier contour. He also places saline or silicone implants to add volume and fullness. The scarring from this operation is more extensive than breast augmentation alone, but most women are happy to trade the scars for a more beautiful breast appearance. As well-meaning as these women are, tune out the other voices in your life and focus on following your plastic surgeon’s instructions and advice. Dr. Ary Krau gives his patients advice that is medically based and in their best interests for a safe and successful recovery.

Take It Easy for One to Two Weeks after Surgery

After surgery, your body needs to recover, and you must refrain from working, exercising, heavy lifting and other activities that will elevate your heart rate. Even if you feel energized and ready to resume your normal routine, you must allow yourself about one to two weeks of complete rest.

When you return to work depends on your specific case and the work you do. Women with desk jobs typically return to work within a week or so, whereas women with more physical jobs need more time to recover. Dr. Krau will give you specific recommendations during your pre- and post-operative consultations.

Don’t Sleep On Your Stomach or Side Until Advised to Do So

Dr. Krau discourages patients from sleeping on their stomachs or sides for about four to six weeks after surgery, to avoid putting pressure on the healing tissues. Not only does this prevent discomfort, it also enables the breast implant capsules to form normally without undue stresses.

Avoid Heavy Lifting

The general rule of thumb is to avoid lifting anything heavier than 10 pounds (including babies and small children) for about eight weeks after surgery. Ignoring this advice could cause bleeding in the space around the implant, called hematoma, which would require emergency surgery to remedy. Heavy lifting can also cause swelling and pain. If in doubt about whether something is too heavy to lift, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Note: Your plastic surgeon will give you additional instructions, some specific to all breast augmentation patients and others specific to just you.

When it comes to breast augmentation, a patient has many options that relate to their personal aesthetic objectives. The options for method of enhancement are typically implants and natural breast augmentation, also known as autologous fat transfer. Implants

There are three types of implants: traditional silicone gel, saline and the newly approved “gummy bear” silicone. Saline implants are not pre-filled by the manufacturer and can be placed through a slightly smaller incision. The saline solution filling is readily absorbed into the body in the unlikely event of a leak. Silicone implants come pre-filled and require a slightly larger incision. Although Dr. Krau believes that silicone implants are extremely safe, in the unlikely event of a rupture, it is harder to detect a problem because the material is quite cohesive.

Silicone implants come in round and teardrop shapes. Round implants are equally full on the top and bottom, and teardrop implants have a natural sloping shape.

Autologous Fat Transfer

Natural breast augmentation uses unwanted fat taken from a patient’s own donor site — like the hips, thighs or abdominal region — and injects it into the breasts to add subtle volume and fullness. Patients who have sufficient fat in another region of their body to contribute to the breasts are likely to be good candidates for natural breast augmentation.

Implant Pros:

• Variety of implant types to suit patient preferences: silicone gel, saline, and “gummy bear” silicone

First Things First …

When you’re describing your ideal breast implant size to Dr. Krau, forget about using cup size. Implant sizes are measured by the amount of fluid or gel in the implant. Implants range in volume from 125 cubic centimeters (cc’s) to 600 or 700 cc’s. Generally, most patients opt for implants in the 300 to 400 cc range.

Some of Dr. Krau’s patients request “C” or “D-cup” breast implants, but those aren’t helpful descriptors, because bra cup sizes vary wildly between brands. Instead, you could say that you would like your augmented breasts to look more proportional to your body, or you could describe your desired shape (e.g., round or teardrop). Alternatively, you could say that you want to achieve breast symmetry.

What do you normally wear? Bring a few shirts or bikini tops in styles you usually wear, so you can try the implants on with them.

Think long-term. Breast implants are designed to be long-lasting devices; they do not need to be replaced unless there is a (rare) complication, or you want to change your breast size. Imagine yourself five, seven or 10 years down the road and consider whether you will be happy with the implants you’ve selected.

The fat is ideal for covering implants, so the results look subtle and natural. Eventually, the fat will develop its own blood supply to survive in the transplanted area. Since it’s your own fat, there is very little chance of an adverse reaction.

There are many advantages to the fat transfer techniques. One of the most noteworthy is the fact that the donor area (abdomen or thighs) will look slimmer, and the grafted area (your breasts) will look bigger!
