Volume vs. Shape and Perkiness

What breast augmentation candidates should understand is the difference between breast volume and breast shape/perkiness. Adding more volume to the breasts does not necessarily give them a perkier appearance. In some cases, it can actually do the exact opposite and make the breasts look saggier and droopier. The natural position of the breasts prior to breast augmentation surgery is largely what determines whether the breasts will look perky with implants.

Breasts that look naturally perky, but are too small for the patient’s liking, are very likely to remain perky after the placement of breast implants. The implants should not cause the breasts to droop or sag — they will simply add more fullness and projection in the upper and lower poles (i.e., regions) of the breasts. Likewise, breasts that are on the naturally small side and have a minimal amount of excess skin may look perkier after surgery because the implant “fills out” the empty skin envelope.

However, breasts that are small and noticeably saggy, with excess hanging skin, do not look perkier after the placement of implants. The implants settle at the bottom of the breasts and actually accentuate the sagging. Over time, the implants can stretch out the loose skin even more, giving the implants a dramatically droopy and aged appearance.

Achieving Larger and Perkier Breasts Simultaneously

Women that want bigger and perkier breasts with noticeable sagging can usually benefit from a combination breast augmentation-breast lift procedure.

During the operation, Dr. Krau trims loose skin and tightens the skin envelope to correct the sagging and give the breasts a perkier contour. He also places saline or silicone implants to add volume and fullness. The scarring from this operation is more extensive than breast augmentation alone, but most women are happy to trade the scars for a more beautiful breast appearance. Avoid Yo-Yo Dieting. Extreme fluctuations in weight can cause the skin — including breast skin — to lose its elastic quality, so it can no longer “bounce back” to a smaller shape and size once you lose a substantial amount of weight. Try to maintain a healthy weight by eating well-balanced, nutritious meals and getting regular exercise.

Don’t Smoke. We all know that smoking is bad for our health. But you may not realize how bad it is for your outward appearance as well. Smoking impedes proper blood circulation and robs your blood of life-giving oxygen. It also damages collagen and elastin, two proteins that are essential for healthy, elastic skin. All these negative effects of smoking can lead to the development of wrinkles, sagging skin and hard, dull-looking skin — throughout your face, décolletage and breasts.

Do Eat Nutritious Foods. Eating the wrong foods, such as excessive amounts of sugar, can wreak havoc on your skin, including your breast skin, making it look dull and dry. However, eating nutritious foods can have a beneficial effect on your appearance. For instance, eating foods high in antioxidants will help combat free radicals that damage skin cells and encourage cellular repair, both of which will help keep your breast skin looking healthy and youthful.

Don’t Go Out in the Sun Without Proper Protection. The skin on your neck and décolletage is thin and sensitive. Also, your chest area gets a lot of sun exposure when you are wearing bathing suits or low-cut blouses and dresses. Sun exposure without proper protection (i.e., clothes or broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF) can cause dark spots (hyperpigmentation) to appear on your décolletage and cleavage wrinkles to develop. To keep your breasts looking young, don’t skimp on the sunscreen, and apply it liberally to your décolletage when you know you will be out in the sun.

Do Stay Active. Staying active will help keep you fit on the inside and looking great on the outside as you age. This includes cardiovascular exercise as well as strength training. Enhancing the muscles in your chest can provide a subtle lift throughout the breast area. Also, building muscle throughout your back, chest, arms and core will help you maintain good posture — which makes you look slimmer and your breasts look perkier. What woman doesn’t want that?

Support Bra

A support bra is a must for the first few weeks after a breast lift procedure. Patients return home from surgery with a soft, supportive bra. The fit of the bra helps the breasts stay in place and reduces swelling. Most patients benefit from wearing the support bra at all times, even to bed. During the first few weeks of recovery, it’s not recommended that patients wear bras with underwire. Along with the surgical bra, sports bras are ideal for the recovery period.

First Few Days

You will most likely experience the greatest amount of discomfort in the first few days after your breast lift surgery. It’s a good idea to have someone around the house to help you out, such as a family member, friend or spouse. Your surgeon can prescribe pain medications to help you manage any pain or discomfort from the surgery. Discuss any pain medications you plan on taking with your surgeon first. Some over-the-counter medicines increase the risk of bleeding and should be avoided.

Driving

Typically, you can begin light activities about a week after your surgery. If you are taking pain medications, you should wait to drive a vehicle until you’ve stopped the medicines. You shouldn’t get back on the road again until you feel alert and able to respond quickly.

Going Back to Work

When you can go back to work depends on what type of job you have. If you have an office job or one that doesn’t require much physical exertion, you might be able to head back within a week of your surgery. Wait until you get the OK from your surgeon to head back to your job if it involves physical activity.

Resuming More Strenuous Activities

You should wait a few weeks before resuming more strenuous activities, such as exercise or sex. Even after you’re able to begin strenuous activities again, you’ll need to be extra careful and to protect the breast area.
