Skin thins and loses elastin, collagen, and hyaluronic acid, allowing lines and wrinkles to tarnish your once smooth appearance. Fat deposits in the cheeks shrink and descend lower, causing jowling. Facial plastic surgeries can address these concerns, but each procedure focuses on specific regions of the face. Combining face procedures, such as facelift and eyelid surgery or rhinoplasty and chin implants, offers more dramatic results for an overall youthful complexion.

Dr. Ary Krau is a board-certified plastic surgeon renowned for his surgical skill and expertise. He was featured on the Bravo TV series “Miami Slice” and takes pride in helping patients achieve their results. Dr. Krau is known for his patient-first approach and sees patients from consultation to their last follow-up, answering questions along the way to ensure excellent, safe outcomes. Depending on your facial concerns and anatomy, he may recommend one or more face procedures to achieve your desired results.

Combining multiple procedures into a single surgery has many benefits, including:

1. Complete Facial Rejuvenation

Facelift focuses on the mid-face, lower face, jawline, and neck. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) addresses the upper and lower eyelids, while rhinoplasty alters the nose. Fat transfer can restore youthful volume to the cheeks, and neck lift provides a graceful contour. Each of these procedures offers unique benefits, and combining two or more can help you achieve your cosmetic goals all at once.

Facelift, neck lift, and eyelid surgery can achieve total facial rejuvenation by addressing several age-related concerns simultaneously. Non-surgical treatments can further improve your results with Botox for forehead lines. Rhinoplasty and chin implants are complementary procedures that can be combined to balance your facial features by adjusting their proportions.

2. Save Time and Money with Combination Plastic Surgery

Streamlining your face procedures into a single surgery means you only need to recover once. Combination plastic surgery allows patients to take less time off overall because they’re not scheduling several procedures over one to two years with several weeks off to recover each time. While recovering from facelift and eyelid surgery or another combination may take longer, you still save time by having the procedure performed at the same time.

Combining face procedures saves you some money as well because you only pay certain fees once. The costs for the plastic surgeon, anesthesiologist, surgical facility, and recovery garments are a one-time expense instead of repeated two or three times for separate surgeries.

3. Fewer Risks and Complications

Dr. Krau works to reduce the rate of complications as much as possible. He performs procedures at our onsite, state-of-the-art, fully accredited surgical center. However, every surgery comes with inherent risks, especially when general anesthesia is involved. A single surgery that combines several face procedures means you only go under general anesthesia once, which lowers your risk of anesthesia-related problems. Multiple surgeries and rounds of anesthesia provide more opportunities for complications to arise.

Photoaging, or sun damage, happens when the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays or artificial UV lights cause the skin to age prematurely. You may develop deepening wrinkles, loss of skin elasticity, and sunspots (skin discoloration). While non-surgical treatments may improve some skin changes caused by sun damage, severe photoaging may require facial plastic surgery to restore a youthful appearance. July is UV Safety Month, and our board-certified plastic surgeon wants you to understand how UV light ages you and what you can do to reverse those changes.

How UV Light Ages Skin Tissue

Excess sun exposure causes a sunburn that may itch or peel in the short-term but carries much more severe (and dire) consequences long-term, such as loose skin and skin cancer. Ultraviolet radiation alters the DNA in your skin tissues, causing premature aging, skin discoloration, and other changes.

UVA light is a type of solar radiation that reaches through the superficial skin layers (epidermis) to the deeper skin tissues (dermis), damaging collagen and elastin fibers, epidermal cells, and tiny blood vessels called capillaries. That damage causes your skin to lose its supple, taut structure. UVB is another type of solar radiation that damages the epidermis, leading to photoaging and precancerous cells (actinic keratoses).

UV damage is cumulative and happens daily, not just when you go to the beach or an outdoor event. Those minutes spent sitting by a window on your commute or weeding your garden add up.

Treating Sun Damage with Plastic Surgery

Non-surgical methods may improve some photoaging, but the loss of skin elasticity and collagen lead to severe signs of aging, such as jowling, drooping eyelids, and loose neck skin. These aesthetic changes are best addressed with facial plastic surgery. These procedures can counteract photoaging and restore a younger appearance.

1. Facelift

Sun damage shows up on the face and neck first. Facelift addresses skin laxity in the lower half of the face by removing loose skin, rearranging underlying muscles, and removing or redistributing displaced fat for a more youthful facial contour.

2. Neck Lift

The neck region is just as delicate, thin, and exposed to UV rays as the face, but many people forget to care for their necks when they apply sunscreen and skincare products. The skin on the neck experiences sun damage at the same pace as the face or faster in some cases. Neck lift removes excess fat that may appear as Venus rings around the neck, excises loose skin, and tightens the platysma muscle that causes vertical neck banding.

3. Eyelid Surgery

The delicate eye area is also vulnerable to photoaging. Blepharoplasty removes loose skin to address drooping eyelids and can also address crow’s feet wrinkles, under-eye bags, and other age-related eyelid concerns.

Dr. Ary Krau is a well-known plastic surgeon in Miami and nationwide for his natural-looking results and media appearances. As a former reconstructive surgery instructor at the University of Miami, he has extensive experience in intricate facial procedures. He is a board-certified plastic surgeon who can help you turn back years of photoaging to look like a younger “you.”

Here Dr. Ary Krau, Miami’s premier plastic surgeon, describes what happens to the eyelids and the skin surrounding the eyes as we age. He also discusses ways to reverse some of these undesirable changes.

The Upper Eyelids

Like all skin, the skin on the eyelids gets progressively thinner and looser as time passes. This causes the lids to become heavier and hang lower over the eyes. Not only do droopy lids age the face, but they also make a person look more tired.

Another change is the loss of an upper eyelid crease. Younger faces usually have a prominent crease that distinguishes the eyelid from the facial skin above, but with time, this crease becomes less pronounced. Moreover, as fat is lost from around this region, the eye appears to be more sunken into the head.

The Lower Eyelids

Although skin and tissue take most of the blame for visible signs of aging, another feature of the undereye area that undergoes significant change is the bone, since bones lose density with age. As the bones below the eye atrophy, it causes bulging by the tear troughs. Drooping fat can accentuate this effect. Consequently, the hollows beneath the eyes become more obvious, and the eyelids loosen.

The Sides of the Eyes

The web-like wrinkles that develop on the outer corner of each eye (AKA crow’s feet) get deeper with age. Eyelid muscles move constantly, and the indentations from these movements gradually linger longer on thinner skin until the crow’s feet appear to be a permanent part of your face.

Cosmetic Procedures to Rejuvenate the Eyes

Dr. Krau performs blepharoplasty for most patients who would like to eliminate signs of aging around their eyes. Upper eyelid surgery removes excess fat and skin just above the eye so that the eyelid can open more fully without sagging. Lower eyelid surgery removes and repositions fat so that the undereye hollows are filled in and the skin is smooth. These surgeries, which help make the face look younger and less tired, can be performed together or separately.

Some patients prefer a non-invasive treatment for their eye rejuvenation. Injectables like Juvéderm can restore volume and smoothness to the undereye area. Botox is the better option for reducing crow’s feet and for subtly lifting the upper eyelid. Though these treatments are exceedingly easy to undergo, the results are temporary, so periodic injections are necessary to maintain the changes.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty reshapes the nose to improve its attractiveness. Many cases of facial asymmetry are the result of a crooked, slanted or off-center nose. Rhinoplasty can center or straighten the nose as needed to enhance the appearance of the entire face.

Brow Lift

Brow lift elevates low or heavy eyebrows. When one eyebrow sits higher than the other, it throws off the balance of the face. Brow lift surgery can subtly reposition the lower brow, bringing it in line with the other to improve facial symmetry.

Alternatively, injecting small amounts of Botox into the forehead can offer some improvement for asymmetrical brows. The injectable temporarily relaxes the muscle that drags that brow down. Unlike brow lift, which produces permanent results, the effects of Botox are temporary and wear off after three to six months (on average).

Facial Fillers

Facial fillers are injectable products that add volume and shape to features of the face. If one cheek appears larger or fuller than the other, it can throw off the proportions of the entire face. Adding volume to one or both cheeks can even out asymmetry between the sides of the face.

Many fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that plumps the target area and makes the skin look youthful and supple. Depending on the specific filler, results can last a few months up to a year or more.

Eyelid Lift

Eyelid lift surgery tweaks the skin and fat of the eyelids to rejuvenate the eye area. If one eyelid appears droopier than the other, eyelid surgery can minimize the droopiness and gently lift that lid to bring both lids into alignment.
