Dr. Krau's Top 10 Skincare Tips
We all desire supple, youthful skin that glows with health! Beautiful skin is a result of a combination of things like a healthy diet and regular exercise,
adequate sleep and plenty of water. Even with the best skincare, age and daily living (things like sun exposure, stress and pollution), will slow the speed
of your skin cell replacement, so that new, younger skin cells take longer to get to the top of your skin. This results in a dull appearance as well as fine
lines, wrinkles and age spots.
Dr. Krau has investigated multiple skincare lines in order to offer the best skincare products for each type of skin. As a basis, every skincare line
includes products to Cleanse, Tone, Moisturize, Protect and Exfoliate. As you read about our primary skincare lines, Obagi Nu-Derm and Nia 24™, keep in mind
that our staff is trained to address your specific skin's needs. We want you to look as young as possible for as long as possible!
Here are Dr. Krau's Top 10 Skincare Tips:
1. Keep your skin clean. Wash your face twice a day with a cleanser that's right for your skin type. Even if you're not going out that day, be sure to wash your
face first thing in the morning-a lot of stuff collects on your skin while you're sleeping, including dust from the air, dead skin cells, even dirt!
2. Protect your skin from the sun by using sunscreen and avoiding the hot sun between 10 AM and 2 PM. Remember, it's not just blondes and redheads who need
sunscreen! Even Latinas and African American women can develop skin cancer from too much unprotected exposure to the hot rays.
3. Release Stress! None of us can eliminate all emotional and environmental stress, so Dr. Krau suggests that you find ways to release stress every day through
yoga, meditation, relaxation techniques, and regular exercise, which also brings oxygen-rich blood to your skin.
4. Get your beauty sleep! Studies show that getting 8 or 9 hours of nightly rest results in more youthful looking skin. Your skin is your largest organ and
needs rest to recover from stress and environmental pollutants.
5. Mom was right about fruits and veggies. Raw, unprocessed fruits and vegetables contain vitamins, minerals and water, all of which are important for skin
nutrition. Buy organic if you can. And remember, eating the whole fruit or vegetable gives you micro-nutrients often lost when processed into juices. Dr. Krau recommends 5 servings of unprocessed fresh fruits and 5 servings of veggies every day!
6. Be gentle with facial skin! Dr. Krau does not recommend facial exercises that stretch delicate skin tissues, and he especially urges you to avoid scrubbing
too hard or using over-the-counter exfoliating or dermabrasion kits. Leave dermabrasion and peels to the pros in our office who have been trained to get the
best results without damaging your skin.
7. Keep your makeup tools clean. Wash or replace cosmetic sponges, brushes and applicators often, as they collect germs, dead skin and dust which you then put
onto your clean face. Dip tweezers into alcohol before you put them away. Get rid of mascara after 90 days to avoid eye infections or irritations.
8. Throw out your old makeup! Do you have a shoebox full of makeup purchased ages ago that you keep "just in case"? Dr. Krau recommends that you throw them all
out, because the average shelf-life for cosmetics is only 6-12 months! Old makeup can cause a nasty skin infection.
9. If you're smoking, stop! Your skin, the largest organ of your body, needs oxygen-rich blood to look its best. Smoking fills your blood with poisons that will
dull and age your skin.
10. Drink your water! Your skin needs water to flush out impurities and to stay plump and soft. And no, coffee isn't a substitute! Dr. Krau recommends 6-8
glasses of clean, pure water everyday. If you don't like tap water, buy bottled!
