A breast augmentation revision is done when implants have been inserted and the result is unsatisfactory, either immediately after your surgery or later.

Here are the 10 most common reasons for breast augmentation revision:

  • One or both of your implants have become hard (called a capsular contraction),
  • One or both of your implants have shifted within the breast tissue, creating a lop-sided appearance,
  • You've been in an accident and one or both breasts were traumatized,
  • You have had your implants for more than 7 years and they need replaced,
  • There is excessive "wrinkling" in the breast tissue from the implant,
  • One or both of your saline implants have lost volume,
  • You would like to remove your implants and not replace them,
  • You would like to replace your saline implants with silicone,
  • You have never been satisfied with the result of your original breast implant procedure or
  • Over time, your breasts have begun to sag and you need a breast lift, during which you wish to either replace the current implants or have a lift without an implant.

We are committed to satisfactory results in our practice, as is any good plastic surgery practice. However, even with the best surgeon, it sometimes happens that a breast implant result isn't quite right, because each woman heals a bit differently than other women. Smokers, in particular, do not heal as well as non-smokers because inadequate oxygen reaches the tissues during the healing period, which can contribute to a poor final result. Some patients scar more than others, and develop keloids (raised scarring) after a breast implant procedure, even if they haven't experienced keloid scarring from other events such as cuts or previous surgeries. Too much activity during the healing period can also impact healing. An accident or other trauma to the breast can damage the implant. Additionally, implants aren't made to last forever. Over time they age, just as your body ages, and need to be replaced.

Because secondary breast augmentation procedures involve scarring from the original implant procedure, it's important that you work with a surgeon who has many years of experience doing breast implant revisions. Dr. Krau has performed breast augmentation and revisions for over 12 years, and is familiar with the scarring that develops. He knows how to work with your particular needs to create the best result in a revision procedure.

Please call our office to schedule a complimentary consultation to evaluate your breast implant revision. During your exam, Dr. Krau will be able to tell you what can be done and the results he hopes to achieve with your particular situation.
